It is caused by a plane flying through air masses that are swarming that move at different speeds.
In the event of moderate or light turbulence, passengers may feel pressure on their seatbelts, and unsecure items may move through within the area.
In extreme instances, the force of turbulence could throw passengers across the cabin, causing grave injuries and even death.
In the month of March, 2023, intense turbulent conditions caused by a private aircraft led to the death of an former White House official, just days after seven passengers were taken to hospitals following an private flight was struck by significant turbulent.
In the month of July 2023, seven passengers were injured during an Hawaiian Airlines flight to Sydney, Australia, when the plane was swayed by intense turbulence. 36 passengers were injured during an Hawaiian Airlines flight from Arizona to Honolulu in December 2022 and 20 were hospitalized in emergency rooms.
A study published in September 2022 suggests that clear-air turbulence will grow substantially across the globe over 2050-2080. This will be particular along the most frequent routes for flights. The most powerful type of turbulence is expected to grow the fastest.
