NEET UG 2024 Result: The National Testing Agency(NTA) has declared the NEET UG Result 2024 at https://exams.nta.ac.in/NEET/. Among the 67 candidates who achieved a perfect score (720/720) in the NEET-UG results, nearly 44 reached the top due to an ironic twist. They answered a basic physics question incorrectly and received “grace marks” for it. Their incorrect answer to a basic physics question was based on an erroneous reference in their old Class 12 NCERT science textbook, leading to them receiving “grace marks.”
Over the past few years, specifically from 2019 up till now, there haven’t been more than three toppers. There was a single topper each year for 2019 and 2020. In 2021, there were three toppers, followed by one topper in 2022, and two toppers in 2023. This year, a multiple-choice question in Physics about atoms turned out to be a high-scoring point for many students.
The National Testing Agency conducted the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG) for more than 24 lakh candidates at 4750 different Centres located in 571 Cities throughout the country including 14 Cities outside India on May 5 from 02:00 PM to 05:20 PM.
NEET UG 2024 Result Discrepancies: How 44 Became NEET Toppers Due to A Wrong Answer and a Wrong Textbook
The question was primarily based on two statements. As per IndianExpress report, the first said: “Atoms are electrically neutral as they contain equal numbers of positive and negative charges.” The second statement said: “Atoms of each element are stable and emit their characteristic spectrum.” Candidates were asked to select the “most appropriate answer” from the following four options:
NEET UG 2024 Provisional Answer Key
The National Testing Agency(NTA) released the NEET UG 2024 Provisional Answer Key on May 29, 2024. Candidates were allowed to raise objections, if any, against the NEET Provisional Answer Key till May 31. However, the last date to challenge the NEET Answer Key was extended till 11:00 AM of June 1, 2024. The NEET UG Final Answer Key was released on June 4. Challenges made by the candidates will be verified by the panel of subject Experts. If the challenge of any candidate is found correct, the Answer Key will be revised and applied in the
response of all the candidates accordingly. Based on the revised Final Answer Key, the result will be prepared and declared. No individual candidate will be informed about the acceptance/non-acceptance of his/her challenge.
As per an IndianExpress report, over 10,000 candidates challenged the answer key on the grounds that an old version of the Class 12 NCERT textbook inaccurately states, “Atoms of each element are stable.” The correct response is that atoms of “most” elements are stable, as stated in the latest version of the NCERT Chemistry textbook.
“Since we strongly recommend all aspirants study only from NCERT textbooks for their NEET preparation, we decided to give credit to all those candidates who marked the third option (of the multiple-choice question) as the answer. The third option stated that both statements 1 and 2 are correct,” an NTA official was quoted as saying to IndianExpress.
In light of this decision, the scores of 44 examinees soared from 715 to an impeccable 720. This remarkable feat placed them among the highest achievers breaking records in this year’s NEET-UG. “In India, for ages, older siblings have been passing on their books to their younger siblings, and there is no harm in it; we have all done it. The NTA cannot ask students to specially buy new books too as it may not be viable for everyone. So, we will hold a meeting and establish proper protocols for such a situation,” another NTA official was quoted as saying to IndianExpress when asked why the NTA decided to award grace marks for an incorrect answer. “We will notify the NCERT now for future reference, but nothing can be done by NCERT for this year’s NEET exam,” the senior official said.
