USA Baseball’s National Team Championships has seen its fair share of high-profile athletes and their families make an appearance at the National Training Camp over the years, and this year’s 2024 16U NC Champs are no different.

The San Diego Padres Scout Team joined the pool of tournaments with an ensemble which included the starting catcher Codey Gauff. Gauff is a descendant of an athletic lineage in his family, which includes his older sister pro tennis star Coco Gauff.

Corey Gauff, their father is there for them since the start of their sporting careers. He’s been credited as Coco’s first tennis coach, while aiding Codey in his baseball career.

“It’s been great to see the kids grow and become competitive in the sports they enjoy while keeping their studies first. I love that they desire to learn and be better each day,” said Corey.

Corey is extremely proud of the pair’s athletic accomplishments, but he acknowledges that the brothers have different backgrounds in relation to their sporting career. Coco was adamant on tennis as Codey tried out a variety of sports before deciding he would like to play baseball.

“Coco decided the career she wanted to pursue from the beginning. Codey had played soccer for a short time and also basketball, sort of getting into baseball later than Coco did in tennis, however, both of them worked hard in their youth,” said Corey. “They both have distinct skills within their sports. It’s been amazing to see their skills develop.”

With constant practices as well as meetings and games The schedule of an athlete could be very busy. for parents, it can present several issues. Particularly when you have a family that has multiple athletes.

“It’s hard for us, as parents, at times since we’re not always at every game with the kids. Coco is playing right now, while Codey’s game continues,” Corey said.

Being the father of several athletes can be exhausting, Corey enjoys every bit of it, watching his children grow up and excel in all of their sports. He hopes that they will remain on the rise both in and out of it, too.

“The most important thing they have to keep doing is to focus on their craft and to continue to work hard to become better. They must be aware of what they can do to improve their skills, and continue to do the things they enjoy doing very well,” said Corey. “I want them to really have fun along the way, because they’re going to be living their lives longer without sport than they are with it.”
