CROMWELL, Conn. — Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler defeated Tom Kim on the first hole of a playoff on Sunday afternoon to win the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. The No. 1 player in the world, Scheffler won for the sixth time this year and became the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to record six PGA TOUR victories in a season before the month of July.

Scheffler posted a 72-hole total that was 22-under 258 (65-64-64-65) and was forced to play in a playoff after Kim made birdie on the 18th hole on Sunday, bringing him to an average of (62-65-65-66). The first hole of the playoff the 18th hole Scheffler was par while Kim was bogey-free and Scheffler took the win six times in the last 10 starts.

Scheffler’s most recent run of historic success has seen him win the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard The PLAYERS’ Championship The PLAYERS Championship, the Masters and the RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament and the Travelers Championship. Scheffler is only the 6th player on PGA TOUR history to register at least six wins in an entire season before the month of July. The other five players include: Jimmy DeMaret (1940), Byron Nelson (1945), Ben Hogan (1946), Sam Snead (1950) and Arnold Palmer (1960 and 1962).

The victory of the Travelers Championship was Scheffler’s sixth win of the year and 12th overall PGA TOUR win. Scheffler is the first athlete ever since Tiger Woods in 2009 to win six times on the PGA TOUR in a season. Scheffler is only the fourth player in the past 40 years who has won more than six times within one TOUR season. Tiger Woods (2000) and Vijay Singh (2004) each had nine wins, while Woods had eight wins in 2006 and 1999, and seven more times throughout 2007. as well.
