Sydney McLaughlin Levrone breaks the 400-meter hurdle world record at U.S. Olympic Trials

Anna Cockrell and Jasmine Jones will join McLaughlin Levrone in the 400m hurdles team at Paris.

Sydney McLaughlin Levrone set a new world record in the 400-meter final at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials held on Sunday.

McLaughlin Levrone, the reigning world gold medalist, finished in 50.65 seconds. Anna Cockrell and Jasmine Jones were only two seconds behind the world No.1 finisher.

The top three finishers all secured places on the Olympic team. This could be a strong event for America in Paris.

McLaughlin Levrone, the reigning world gold medalist and world No.1, barely sweated in Saturday’s semifinals. The world No. 1 barely sweated during the semi-finals of Saturday’s competition, and advanced to the finals at Hayward Stadium in Eugene on Sunday.

McLaughlin Levrone was a calm, collected McLaughlin who promised to “let it fly” in the final event at this meet.

McLaughlin fulfilled her promise. She covered her mouth in shock and knelt down on the floor when she saw that her time was a record.

McLaughlin thanked God for the victory and said she was “amazed”, “in shock” and “in awe”.

Cockrell was able to push her and record a personal best 52.95 in the semifinals, qualifying for the final. She improved on that time by 52.64 seconds in the finals.

Cockrell’s excitement over breaking the 53-second barrier was in stark contrast to McLaughlin’s professionalism.

She replied, “It’s a sign that I’m ready.” It means that the work we’ve done in the past worked.

Shamier little, who won the Saturday heat, and Dalilah Mohamed, the Tokyo Silver medalist of last year’s Olympics, also comprised Sunday’s field.

Cockrell, who finished second in the 400-meter hurdles race said she was “emotional” but wanted to take the opportunity to talk about Muhammad. Cockrell said Muhammad “revolutionized” the event.

Cockrell said that “the impact of your sport goes beyond records and medals.”

Muhammad finished in sixth place, but lost out on a spot in Paris.

Cockrell said, “Your grace, poise, competition, and your mentoring me — I can’t thank ‘De” enough. “I want to give her her flowers now.

Keni Harrison, who won the Silver Medal in Tokyo, and Nia Ali, who won the Silver Medal in Rio competed in the women’s 100 horse race. Alayha Johnson competed, too. She had the fastest time in the semifinal (12.36 seconds).

Harrison finished sixth and Ali was fourth. Both failed to make the team.

The 100-meter race winner was World No. Masai Russel was the 17th runner. Johnson and Grace Stark were the next two runners.

Rai Benjamin, who won silver at the Tokyo Olympics in the 400-meter hurdles for men, has also secured his spot. CJ Allen, Trevor Bassitt and others also made it.

Benjamin, Allen and Bassitt posted the fastest final times of 46.46 and 48.81. Bassitt had the fastest time at 47.82.
