Mark Cavendish claims record-breaking 35th career Tour de France stage win

The experienced Isle of Man sprinter broke the record of Eddy Merckx for the most time.

 

SAINT VULBAS, France -The race’s winner Mark Cavendish wrote a new chapter in Tour de France history in what’s likely to be his final appearance in the world’s most famous cycling race.

The veteran Isle of Man sprinter broke the record for Eddy’s longest-running, most successive Tour de France stages with his 35th victory on Wednesday.

A 39 year old Cavendish took the lead in the 5th stage of the Tour by making a quick progress of approximately 100m from the finish despite getting caught with. He crossed the line ahead of Jasper Philipsen and then celebrated with his teammates.

Norwegian sprinter Alexander Kristoff, who had lost control earlier, finished 3rd. They had similar times of four hours and eight minutes and 46 secs.

19 years on from his initial Tour stage win, Cavendish spoke of his insatiable drive to take home the victory.

“I always dreamed of winning a second occasion,” said Cavendish, who was joined by his children on top of his list. “It takes a lengthy process to make it every season. I’m blessed with incredible friends and family members. 

The two-time champion Tadej Pogacar had been successful in avoiding being involved in a crash, and was able to climb into the top of the pack, in the 35th spot. While Pogacar kept his yellow jersey from the leader of the race, it was won by Cavendish.

He hit the same number that Merckx did with 34 wins on his 2021 Tour. He came close to getting the mark of. 35 on the seventh stage of the tour last year in which he narrowly fell short of Philipsen. He was thrown off the track and broke one of the collarbones on his left.

Merckx The Belgian believed as the greatest powerful cyclist in history of cycling. He took home 34 stages of the Tour between 1969 and 1975.

Cavendish’s determination to attempt another shot was the reward.

“I was trying to get in the race to do it. I’m stunned. Astana took a big risk with this race this year, in order to make sure we’re successful at the upcoming Tour de France,” Cavendish said. “We’ve accomplished it. 

In 2023, when his race was about to close in the early hours of the morning, Cavendish chose to delay his retirement for a single year and then raced again.

After that, Cavendish made cycling history when he took his first Tour stage in 2008.

Other riders were happy for Cavendish, with several stopping to speak with or hug him after the 177.4-kilometer (110-mile) leg from Saint-Jean-De-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas

Merckx was a multiple winner during an era when his power was intense that he was dubbed “The Cannibal.” In contrast to Merckx who is among only four riders to have been crowned champions of the Tour five times, Cavendish has never won the overall title or even had a chance to do so.

But Cavendish’s endurance within the ranks of his fellow Tour sprinters is unrivaled.

He was awarded the Tour de France best sprinter’s green jersey twice. He also was a participant in the stages of all three Grand Tours — the two others are the Giro d’Italia and Spanish Vuelta -He was also named world champion in the year 2011.
