A crowd of people is in a chorus. The two Emperors from Rome are looking to bleed. Rejoin the coliseum gentlemen and ladies, and prepare for a thrilling fight.
After a multitude of teaser trailers and previews were released over the last few weeks the first trailer for Gladiator II is out today and it’s absolutely stunning. I’ve never been so excited about a film about Rome for quite a while when the initial trailer to the original Gladiator came out nearly twenty-five years in the past. (I’ve bought the movie in Blu-ray 4K format, and have been playing it for the first ever time prior to it’s sequel’s debut).
An sequel Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix’s epic historical drama that begins a few years after the first film the story follow Lucius (Paul Mescal) the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of the film’s villain Commodus (Phoenix).
Lucius was a young boy in the film, played as a child by Spencer Treat Clark. His mother sent Lucius to Africa and out of Rome’s prisons however, he returns on the screen in a sequel as an acrobat. The film depicts fighting against Macrinus who is strong and clever (Denzel Washington) and General Marcus Acacius, who once was under the general Maximus (Crowe ).

The film is as impressive and epic as the first film, featuring a an impressive cast of actors. Mescal is a young Irish actor who is under-appreciated among the main actors, however Director Ridley Scott became a fan of his work after watching Normal People. The two had a conversation for around one hour before Scott took the decision to choose him for the leading actor. Mescal was also on Aftersun, a show that received a lot of applause from the viewers which was later added on Netflix.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Pascal discovered that the fight scenes of the film are difficult for filming. “It’s brutal, man. I refer to him as Brick Wall Paul,” Pascal said of Co-stars with him. “He has become so powerful. I’d rather be kicked out of an area rather than fight Paul again. If I had to battle anyone who’s that powerful and skilled, and more young. …. in addition to Ridley being an absolute genius, Paul is a big reason that I to put my body through this kind of experience. “
Mescal stated that he did not intend to look like models wearing underwear, but rather focus on combat choreography “I just wanted to be big and strong and look like somebody who can cause a bit of damage,” Mescal said to Vanity Fair.
Nielsen She, who is reprises the role as Lucilla and Lucilla has said about Pascal, “What a gift this actor is. to play or to have fun with. I’m in love with his character and he’s perfect for the role. He’s among the few actors who have heart, soul, and a remarkable ability to transform. “
In addition to the ensemble The cast includes Fred Hechinger ( Thelma) as Emperor Caracalla and Joseph Quinn ( Stranger Things) as Emperor Geta. They appear to be somewhat sloppy at the camera in this video.
Scott is, for his part, Scott declares that the sequel is extremely important to Scott, particularly after he renounced the chance to produce a lot of his earlier classics. “I believe I ought to have made one of the sequels Alien as well as Blade Runner. The characters change as you age. At the time I didn’t want revisit it.” James Cameron ended as the director of the sequel to Alien and Blade Runner. Dune Director Denis Villeneuve, directed Blade Runner 2049. In the 1980s, as an actor in his early years, “I was never told or even was I ever asked. It’s not surprise that I wasn’t content. “
The one thing I’m not thrilled with in the trailer is the strange inclusion of hip-hop music I’m certain it was the brilliant plan of a marketing executive to attract young people Many of them weren’t born when the first film was made. This doesn’t work.
Gladiator IIopens on November 22nd. Alongside Deadpool and Wolverine, this is among my top films to watch for the second quarter in 2024.
