AOC has submitted impeachment papers to Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez D-N.Y. This Wednesday Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez presented impeachment documents for Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. she introduced impeachment articles on Wednesday to Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito for refusing to withdraw from specific cases.
“Absent resignation, they must be removed,” Ocasio-Cortez said on the House on the floor, stating that she believes that the justices have impeded the supremacy of law.
“Because of Alito’s and Thomas’s refusals to recuse, everyday Americans cannot, should not and will not believe that these justices, and consequently the court they serve, is working to uphold the Constitution and put the country ahead of their own individual self-interests,” she said to reporters on Wednesday night.
“Reasonable Americans will and do believe that Justices Thomas and Alito are prone and subject to corruption, that the institution failing to punish them is broken and that consequently their impeachment is a constitutional imperative and our congressional duty,” she stated.
Ocasio Cortez said that both justices displayed an “yearslong sequence of misdeeds” and the failure to recuse in trials that clearly revealed their financial and personal involvement. “
She stated that “represents an overreach of power and a the threat to our democracy. fundamentally uncongruous with the continued existence on the highest court of our country. “
Supreme Court did not immediately respond to a request for feedback about the introduction to the impeachment document.
They also co-sponsored Reps. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., Delia Ramirez of Illinois., Maxwell Frost from Florida., Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. and Jamaal Bowman D-N.Y.
The first charge centers on two flags that are controversially carried in front of Alito’s homes, including one flag that was upside-down American flag, as in addition to an “Appeal to Heaven” flag. Both flags have been used recently by supporters that are a part of”Stop The Steal” and”Stop the Steal.” or “Stop the Steal” movement that claims they claim they believe that Joe Biden had no legal right to have the right to be a winner in his 2020 presidency. Alito has stated that the flag was not his wife’s decision to display the flag.
Alito did not take himself outfrom two legal cases related to Trump that were the responsibility of the court at the time the flags were first declared.
The second charge against Alito is believed to be connected to his ties to billionaire hedge fund investor Paul Singer, who ProPublica has claimed had accompanied Alito for fishing excursions to Alaska that Alito did not acknowledge when he wrote his ethical reports. Alito later chose not to remove himself from situations which involved Singer.
Thomas the impeachment piece centers on Thomas “failure to provide financial earnings, gifts and reimbursements as well as property interests, liabilities, and transactions as well as his refusing to recuse himself from issues that concern his spouse’s legal rights in court proceedings [and] refusing to withdraw from any matters that concern the financial interest of his spouse in court cases. “
Thomas’s connections to mega-donor in the Republican party Harlan Crow has been the subject of intense scrutiny for months.
An extensive investigation conducted in the past year by ProPublica discovered it was the case that Thomas has received extravagant gifts like vacations and flights, but has not disclosed the details on ethical forms.
Thomas has received criticism from people who criticize the political zeal displayed by the wife Ginni Thomas particularly the fact that she was involved in her role in the presidency of former President Donald Trump’s efforts to rescind the presidential elections for 2020, which took place in Arizona.
After Trump’s victory, Ginni Thomas was also a texter to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to stand with Trump. She later acknowledged that she regretted sending these messages.
The problem is that Democrats demanded Clarence Thomas to pull himself out of two lawsuits that involved Trump: a constitutional contest against his presidential campaign as as his claim to immunity from the presidency. Thomas could not recuse himself from either cases, and both of the victories were are for Trump.
It was his decision to, however, withdraw himself from a second Jan. 6 related case during October.
