LOS ANGELES — Led by host Serena Williams, The ESPYS commemorated a historic year in women’s sport, including Simone Biles, A’ja Wilson, Caitlin Clark, Dawn Staley and JuJu Watkins among the honorees on Thursday night.

Staley has been the head coach for the national champion South Carolina women’s basketball team. She was recognized with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for her dedication to the cause of equal gender representation in female sports as well as for her part in combating the disease. Her close friend, Tennessee standout Nikki McCray-Penson was diagnosed with breast cancer, and passed away, and the sister of her was also diagnosed with leukemia. Staley was motivated by their battle to become a fervent advocate for cancer research.

“I have to admit that I’m not entirely worthy of this honor. The past winners of the Jimmy V Perseverance Award have been through a lot and proved that they are true warriors” Staley declared. “I was merely a spectator to their incredible determination and strength. 

The Staley’s Gamecocks also won the top team award.

Wilson who is a player for The Las Vegas Aces was named the best female player in the sport. Additionally, she was named the best WNBA player.

“It’s crazy to think that a young girl that didn’t even want to play basketball is now up in the running for even one ESPY,” she declared in her videotaped comments.

Biles was awarded the honor of having most remarkable comeback week prior to the time she’ll participate for the first time at the Paris Olympics. The most successful gymnast in history of sports has opted out of team competitions of her first Tokyo Games to prioritize her mental health.

Clark From the Indiana Fever also was honored with two awards. One in recognition of her world-record performance and the other becoming the school’s record-setting scoring top college athlete and leader to honor the length of her Iowa basketball college experience.

“I’m a little bit busy in Indianapolis,” Clark recorded on videotape. “It was a memorable year in women’s sports. 

Watkins received the award for the most outstanding breakthrough athlete The first award was presented to him after the nationally-telecast news conference which began late in the night and lasted for 30 minutes longer than the time scheduled.

“This is crazy,” Watkins declared. “I would like to express my gratitude to all the amazing, powerful women before me to make this happen.

Gleason was greeted with standing ovations as he walked to his stage, seated in a motorized chair and was greeted by his old New Orleans Saints teammate Drew Brees. Gleason’s voice was heard by special equipment. His child, Rivers, stood next to his father and was holding the award.

“For me, this honor represents some encouragement and triumph for the families currently living with ALS, all the people living with disabilities or other illnesses,” declared he said. “I believe that if you’ve never experienced anxiety, loneliness or fear then you are free to roll your sacred a** right out of this place. 

Shohei Ohtani who played from the Los Angeles Dodgers was best MLB player. Connor McDavid of the Stanley Cup finalist Edmonton Oilers was best NHL player. Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks was the top NBA player.

Most successful of male athlete can be identified as Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He was also considered most effective NFL athlete.

Cooper Flagg a veteran guard-forward who hails born in Montverde (Florida) Academy and track and field star Sadie Engelhardt of Ventura (California) High School, were awarded the Gatorade National Player of the Year.
