Sonya Massey, a cherished mother friend, daughter and a young Black woman, ought to be alive today. Sonya was contacted by police when she was worried about a possible intruder. When we need assistance, all of us as Americans regardless of our race, or where we reside – should be able make a call without being afraid for our lives. Sonya’s murder at the by a responding officer is a reminder that too frequently Black Americans face fears for their safety in ways that many of of us don’t.

Sonya’s family deserves to be treated with respect. I am deeply grieving for her children as well as her whole family as they deal with the unimaginable loss of a loved one. Jill and I share our grief along with the rest of the nation, and our prayers for Sonya’s family loved ones, her family and friends during this heartbreaking moment.

I applaud the quick action which were taken by Springfield’s State’s Attorney’s Office. As we wait for the case be remanded for trial we should pray for the comfort of those who are grieving. Congress must approve the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act right now. Our basic dedication to justice is at risk.
