Ice Spice is the picture of indifference towards “Y2K! “

Two years after she exploded into fame with a soaring kiss-off song in “Munch (Feelin’ U),” Ice Spice has finally released her debut album. It’s the teen Bronx rapper’s long-awaited chance that we’re expected to grasp that she’s more than a viral sensation.
Why bother?
It’s the laidback vibe and the obvious effect “Y2K!,” on which Ice Spice spends 23 minutes in a trance while sifting through 10 songs which talk about love, competition, as well as the cold logic of infidelity “If he’s cheating I’m doing him worse,” she claims. “I don’t care because the first time he did it was him. “
The latest member of the impressive list of New York City voices, Ice Spice arrived in 2022 with a relaxed attitude which is perfectly suited for the streamlined presentation of TikTok. Since her arrival, she’s been in the top five spots on PinkPantheress and has also been to “Barbie World” with Nicki Minaj as well as racked up four Grammy nominations, and is the best friend of the crowd that isn’t even close to Taylor Swift. (She even made a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial with Ben Affleck. ) However, she’s not thrilled about “Y2K!,” as it transforms into a sigh, another cause of discontent.
“Everybody be knowing my name,” she declares”Everybody knows my name,” she says in “BB Belt.” “Just want the money, I don’t want the fame. “
The reason this approach works is how she combines her slack, talky voice against the beats of RiotUSA, which are often icy and intimidating (as as in “Oh Shhh” …” and “BB Belt”) or vibrant and slick (as the case with “Think U the S-” (Fart)” or “Did it first”). The captivating music from Ice Spice has its roots in drill but also draws inspiration from the trap genre as well as Jersey club. Together, she and Ice Spice are able to turn an slangy phrase”Fat Butt”, I’m Pulling My Pants Up” is one of them “Fat butt, pull my pants up” is only one of them, to make an enticing hook and later make it into a kind of a low-boil phrase.
Together with Central Cee, Travis Scott and Gunna appeared as hosts for “Y2K!,” whose title refers to Ice Spice’s birth date, January. 1st January January 1, 2000. They’re both fantastic but each rapper’s monotonous speech fades away in the midst of Ice Spice’s uncontrollable anger.
Does “Y2K!” ultimately feel to be a little tinny considering the length of time it took to manifest? Sure. But the album’s throwaway nature is refreshingly fresh in the midst of a long year of extravagantly-conceived pop events like Beyonce’s ” Cowboy Carter” and Swift’s ” The Tortured Poets Department.” Contrary to her fellow artist with her long line of unhappy ex-lovers Ice Spice does not show sense of guilt in this tiny tunes. She’s floating on an air of disinterest.
