BOSTON (AP) — In an effort to revive a struggling team The New York Yankees acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins on Saturday for three minor leaguers including the catcher Agustin Ramirez as well as Infielder Jared Serna and infielder Abrahan Ramirez.
New York was on the 10-23rd of September after a 50-22 opening with a sputtering start pitching, a weak bullpen, and an offense that is dependent to Aaron Judge and Juan Soto due to injuries sustained by Giancarlo Stanton, and Anthony Rizzo. 3rd baseman DJ LeMahieu and left fielder Alex Verdugo have been in deep slumps.
A second baseman who will be an All-Star in 2022, 26-year-old Chisholm has been a center fielder for the majority of the last two seasons.
“Excited,” Judge said after the Yankees came back to win an 11-8 win in 10 innings against the Red Sox. “He’s an extremely athletic player, and you could definitely play him up at the leadoff position or anywhere else, he’ll definitely extend this lineup. … He’s an instrument. You can place him into the field. You can place him anywhere on the inside of the field. He’s fast. He’s got the power.”
Chisholm is batting .249 with 50 RBIs and 13 homers this season and has an .246 career hitter, with 205 RBIs and 66 homers over five seasons. Chisholm has 22 bases stolen equal to the number he stole last year and is one short of his career-high.
“Very athletic, talented and speedy it seems like a versatile player, and you know, is able to play in a variety of areas,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone stated. “I’ve only watched him from a distance, clearly however, he is clearly a skilled new player.”
Chisholm earns a salary of $2,625,000 following being beaten by Chisholm to the Marlins during arbitration. He’s eligible for arbitration in the following years 2024-2025. He could become an independent player following his 2026 World Series.
“It’s always difficult to lose the energy of a player such as Jazz,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker stated. “He could not resist the urge to shift from the positions. He was eager to move between positions. He improved in the event that you wanted him to become better at different spots and against pitching left handed.”
LeMahieu, who is a two-time batting champion He did not make his debut until May 28, after injury to his left foot after he stepped on an off-speed pitch in the spring training match on March 16. Three times an All-Star He is currently batting .178 with one homer and 12 RBIs in 135 games He has only two hits in the last 28 games.
LeMahieu’s .495 OPS ranked 383rd among 392 players who had over 100 plate games prior to Saturday, and his 59.1 percent ground ball rate was ranked seventh. LeMahieu was struggling after a fractured sesamoid bone that was in the big toe of his right, which caused ligament damage in the second of his toes in 2022. He scored .220 in the first quarter of this year, but .273 during the 2nd.
He has two seasons left under a $90 million six-year agreement that pays a total of $15 million each year.
Verdugo was hitting .160 (20 for the 125th time) with seven RBIs and a homer starting on June 15 the season, bringing his average down to .266 down to .231.
Additionally the rookie first baseman Ben Rice was 4 for 50 after hitting three homers during the 7th of July win over the Red Sox.

Abrahan Ramirez. 19-year-old hit .348 with two hits as well as the team scored 24 RBIs with his team, the Florida Complex League Yankees.
“I do not know where he’s going to hit but he’s likely to take a swing at Soto and Judge that’s pretty amazing,” Schumaker said. “So that makes them better, and I’m very happy for the guy.”
