New England Patriots starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett was injured on his throw shoulder during the opening quarter on Sunday’s 20-10 loss in the preseason against Washington Commanders. Washington Commandos and coach Jerod Mayo claiming that the veteran could have played in the event that they decided to keep him on the field for longer.
“I talked to him, but we’ll see [Monday]. You always feel a little bit more sore the next day,” Mayo stated. “But he said he was good.”
Brissett smiled as the Washington’s KJ Henry on the sixth offensive line play when the 6’4 255-20-pound Henry arriving free due to a misjudgment in blocking and the entire weight of his body falling on the right shoulder. When Brissett got up and sat down, he put his left hand across his chest in order to grasp the front of the shoulder.
He was able to stay in the game by completing an 8-yard pass in the next play, after that, he made a perfect long throw towards receiver K.J. Osborn that was thrown out.
Brissett was removed out of the game following that she was dropped, that Mayo declared was the intention in advance to ensure the rookie Drake Maye could play until the final quarter of the second half.
“He would have been able to continue,” Mayo stated about Brissett who spent the remainder of the night in the stands.
In lieu in place of Brissett, Maye finished 13-of-20 for 128 yards and a touchdown. It happened in his very first play. Maye also scored a 17-yard run that was crucial to help set up the team’s sole touchdown.
If the injury of Brissett proves to be more serious, Mayo and his coaching team will determine whether they’re comfortable handing the blame to Maye as the number. third overall selection at the time of his draft. Mayo did not make a decision following Sunday’s game, stating that he had to go over the video.
“I would like to sit here and say 100 percent, he is our second-best quarterback on our roster right now,” Mayo stated.
The biggest issue that could be a hindrance to this possibility is the offensive cast around it and the offensive line, especially. The Patriots their most offensive line (minus center David Andrews) was penalized for eight times on Sunday. There was also one shotgun snap, a second erroneous center-quarterback exchange as well as a blocker error during the play that led to Brissett was tackled. All of the penalties involved not aligning correctly and three of them were on right tackle Chukwuma Okorafor and one against right tackle Mike Onwenu.
Alongside Brissett and Maye In addition to Maye and Brissett, the Patriots are also home to newcomer Joe Milton III and veteran third-year Bailey Zappe on their quarterback depth chart prior to the deadline on Tuesday to reduce the roster down to 53 players.
From the start of the training camp Mayo has always maintained the fact that Brissett is the starting point with Maye being a possibility to get the job should the former “lights it up.”
If he was asked if he would feel prepared if he was called to play in opening game of the season, Maye replied: “Yeah, I think I would feel ready. I think I’m ready for whatever this football team asks of me and ready to get out there and try to help beat the Bengals Week 1.”
Jacoby Brissett has only played one drive after he fell over his shoulder when he was taken off. (0:18)
