Chiefs release WR Kadarius Toney among roster cuts

The Chiefs have decided to waive the wide receiver Kadarius Toney, according to a source who informed the ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Just two years after making one of the most famous games in the history of the franchise, the wide receiver Kadarius Toney was one of the players who were cut from Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday. Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday.

Toney’s 65-yard kick return at the end of fourth quarter in Super Bowl LVII was instrumental in helping bring the Chiefs the 38-35 win in the game against Philadelphia Eagles. Toney was also able to score a touchdown on the receiving side during the 4th quarter initially was in the midst of Eagles players during the kickoff return but then broke off and cut through the middle of the game. Toney was attacked prior to reaching the goal line however, the play set up the Chiefs their final touchdown.

The other Chiefs Super Bowl hero, wide receiver Mecole Hardman was included on his debut on the 53-player team. The Chiefs retained seven wide receivers from their original roster.

Hardman recorded the decisive touchdown the final minutes during the Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Justyn Ross was also one of the wide receivers released by the Chiefs. Ross received the ball six times for 53 yards in the last season.

The Chiefs also released the former European rugby player Louis Reesz-Zammit who was attempting to be a part of the squad as running back. Rees-Zammit was only given a few minutes of practice as a running back in the training camp. In preseason, he rushed seven times for 22 yards. He also caught one passing for three yards.

The Chiefs have also added another tight player to their roster, by purchasing Peyton Hendershot from the Dallas Cowboys for an unspecified 2026 seventh-round selection.

The Chiefs also sold a seventh-round selection in 2025 with the Arizona Cardinals for defensive lineman Cameron Thomas.

Toney was drafted into in the NFL in 2021, as a first-round selection for the New York Giants. Toney had been traded to the Chiefs during the middle of the 2022 season in exchange for the third and sixth round draft selections.

The Chiefs in May opted out of the option to extend Toney’s fifth year contract.

Toney was a receiver on 16 passes over nine games during his first season during his first season with the Chiefs. They believed he would be their No. one wide receiver in 2023 but it didn’t happen.

He was absent from all training camp following surgery for a meniscus tear. He returned just in time to begin the regular season, but ended up catching just 27 passes. He twice blocked the seemingly ball catchable to defenders for interceptions.

Toney was also able to score the winning touchdown after he took the lateral of Travis Kelce during a week 14 match with the Buffalo Bills, however the play was washed out after Toney was disqualified for offside, and the Chiefs were ultimately unable to win the game.

Toney was out of action for the of the four Chiefs playoff games.

After 32 contests, he’s had an average of 82 receptions, resulting in 3 touchdowns and 760 yards.
