A former Minnesota Gophers volleyball player playing volleyball Airi Miyabe (2019-21) is now ready to compete for Team Japan in 2024 Olympic Games for Team Japan at 2024 Olympic Games.

PARIS, France — Former Gophers volleyball player Airi Miyabe (2019-21) is practicing to play for Team Japan in the 2024 Olympic Games.

Japan will compete in Pool B with Poland, Brazil and Kenya. Two teams who are at the most successful of the group will advance into the knockout stage which is made up of 16 teams. The games will be available for streaming online on Peacock .
Japan’s Schedule:
On July 28, vs. Poland, 6 a.m. CT on Peacock
Thursday, Aug. 1 vs. Brazil, 6 a.m. CT on Peacock
Saturday, Aug. 3 vs. Kenya, 6 a.m. CT on Peacock

The University of Minnesota volleyball team has been a major player in the Olympics over the last two decades. It will continue to be the case when it comes to the 2024 Paris Olympics as the position of the team, which was previously called Gopher Airi Miyabe (2019-21) was chosen to Japan’s Olympic team for the 2019-21 season. For the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Gophers alumni Tori Dixon (’14), Hannah Tapp (’16) and Sarah Wilhite Parsons (’16) were selected as alternates players on the U.S. Olympic team. Minnesota volleyball has been a part of each Olympic Games since 2004.

Miyabe, a former outside hitter at Minnesota, plays middle blocker for Japan. Her debut Olympic team spot after her impressive performance during the Volleyball Nations League. She was on the bench in the semis of the tournament. She racked up 11 points, with six kills, the four block and Ace to guide Japan towards their debut VNL final, a victory of 3-2 against Brazil. 1 ranked Brazil.

As a Gophers player, Miyabe was an Academic All-Big Ten three times player from the year 2019 until. In Minneapolis the Gophers were able to make an appearance in the Final Four, an Elite Eight and a Sweet 16. Her best season was in 2021 when she played in 27 games and had an average of 2.97 kills. Additionally, she had 0.93 digs as well as 0.27 blocks in the set. Miyabe scored .240 all through the year, and was elevated to a position that she could be a part of later on in the season. In the 2021 Sweet 16 match against Baylor, Miyabe stepped up for an all-time record of 18 kills, based on .324 hitting. She was selected for the NCAA Madison Regional All-Tournament Team and was also named an AVCA All-North Region Honorable Mention in 2021.
