Justice Department issued the following statement from Attorney General Merrick B. Garland on the arrest of alleged leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, Ismael Zambada Garcia (El Mayo) and Joaquin Guzman Lopez:

The Justice Department issued the following statement by the Attorney General Merrick B. Garland regarding the arrests of suspected top leaders from the Sinaloa Cartel, Ismael Zambada Garcia (El Mayo) and Joaquin Guzman Lopez:

“The Justice Department has taken into custody two additional suspects believed to be high-ranking leaders from the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most powerful and violent drug trafficking organizations around the world. Ismael Zambada Garcia, also known as “El Mayo,”” Cofounder of the Cartel and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, a son of another cofounders were arrested this morning in street corners of El Paso, Texas.

Two men both in the midst of various charges across in the United States for leading the Cartel’s illegal activities, which include the production of fentanyl, which is deadly, as well as trafficking networks.

El Mayo along with Guzman Lopez are added to the listing of Sinaloa Cartel leaders and associates who are being held accountable through authorities that the Justice Department is holding accountable in the United States. The list includes the second co-founder of the Cartel, Joaquin Guzman Loera, who is also known by the name “El Chapo”; another of the children of El Chapo and a unknown Cartel chief, Ovidio Guzman Lopez; and the Cartel’s chief sicario, Nestor Isidro Salas or “El Nini. 

Fentanyl is among the most dangerous drug that our nation has ever seen and that’s why it’s an imminent threat to is being addressed by the Justice Department will not rest until every single cartel’s chief or member that has been accountable for the contamination of the communities we live in is accountable.
