Canada 2-1 USA (Sep 7, 2024) Game Analysis

Expertly compiled recap and analysis of the Canada game between Canada and. United States International Friendly game that took place on 7 September 2024, on ESPN.

The United States men’s national team suffered their first loss at home to Canada since more than 67 years, as the team continued to struggle after last season’s Copa America in Saturday’s friendly in Kansas City, Kansas.

In the first match after being eliminated from the Copa America at the group stage, and following the removal by Gregg Berhalter as head coach The U.S. was well beaten by its neighbours to north.

The victory was Canada’s first win against USMNT. It was Canada’s second win over USMNT at U.S. soil in 27 games. It was the first time after 1957 St. Louis.

As Mauricio Pochettino is likely to announce his appointment as Berhalter’s top-rated replacement his predecessor in the U.S. was under the interim leadership under the former coach Mikey Varas. Canada was meanwhile continuing to show its growth under a different ex- U.S. assistant coach, and once a contender for U.S. head coach, Jesse Marsch.

Canada that reached semi-finals in its debut Copa at the end of July had a particularly strong performance during the first quarter. Jacob Shaffelburg scored the first goal within the first minute of play, and Canada could be more than a goal ahead of its uninspired opponents at half-time.

A well-deserved second goal was scored to Canada with the help of forward Jonathan David just after the hour mark. While the Americans were able to improve after the break in the second half, and Luca de la Torre‘s first international goal cut it’s deficit to 66 in the last minutes, it wasn’t enough to stop the USMNT falling to another loss in a row.

The U.S. will next face New Zealand in Cincinnati on Tuesday.

The 23-game home undefeated streak against Canada was the longest run of unbeaten streaks in any match. However, there was no evidence of this record when Canada beat a static U.S. 11-1 in the first half.

Columbus Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte made his second appearance on the international stage and was replaced by Matt Turner, who hasn’t been in a club game since April 2. Tim Ream started after his move to Charlotte from Fulham in the transfer of Fulham Charlotte.

None of the MLS athletes been in the previous six games and only eight of 198 starting spots have been filled by MLS players during the 18 matches where the entire pool of players is available until in the 2022 World Cup.

Canada was on the move as Schulte kept the ball following the backpass and threw the ball out wide to Ream, whose cross across the field towards Johnny Cardoso bounced off the midfielder and was taken and redirected to Stephen Eustaquio. He passed the ball to David who passed an initial pass to Shaffelburg. He took a whiff and played the ball through Schulte’s left-hand for the fourth time in 17 appearances for the international team.

Canada scored its first goal against Americans on America in U.S. for the first time in 19 matches since 1985.

David got the goal after taking Ream’s pass and then centering it to Cyle Larin. Kristoffer Lund‘s tackle caused the ball to fall to David who smashed Schulte at the near post from seven yards. David’s 29 goals were tied with Larin in his record as the Canadian total scoring records.

There were six U.S. players were held over by their Copa America loss to Uruguay: Ream, fellow defenders Chris Richards and Joe Scally midfielder Yunus Musah, and forwards Folarin Balogun and Christian Pulisic.
