McIntosh The fastest woman to ever compete at the event she was in a category entirely her own at the beginning of the four-stroke, eight-lap race. She finished in 4:27.71 and won with 5.69 second over Grimes. This was the biggest win margin in the race at the Olympics since 1984.
“I was extremely content to get this job completed, and to be on the top of the podium and win an award of gold. It’s always just about having fun and challenging my body and mind to the limits,” said McIntosh, who also won silver in the freestyle 400m Saturday evening. “I’m just trying to make Team Canada proud, and establish the tone,” she added.
Grimes 18 won the first Olympic medal when she placed fourth in the freestyle event of 800m in the Tokyo Olympics when she was just 15 years old she was the youngest participant of Team USA in any sport during those Games.
She was given the chance to create history in Paris. No woman has ever been awarded the medals in the open-water swimming pool and swimming during the Olympics. Grimes will be swimming in the women’s 10km open-water race, which is scheduled for August. 8.
Weyant also added bronze her silver medal that she received in the same contest at Tokyo.
“I’m simply thrilled being back in the stage. It’s been a long three years for me. The mere fact of being back with my teammates is the most important thing to me. This is an opportunity to redeem myself. It’s been my focus all year long,” Weyant said.
