HTML0 North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a cyberattack against an unmanaged vendor’s system since May.
The 13th of May, the NC SBI agency network received an email with details about the attack on their network. The email was sent a few weeks after the time that the SBI received a notice that their network was at risk.
Angie Grube with the SBI has released an update to WRAL News, noting no personal information was compromised during the incident.
“In May, a cyberattack encrypted data on a server,” the statement reads. “The incident was a problem for a vendor-managed system. The next day, steps were taken to fix the system. When we noticed an unusual activity, our security team implemented protocols to reduce the risk and protect the system. Fortunately the breach didn’t cause any harm to other systems operated by the SBI and ensured that our systems are secure. It is also important to remember that there was no Personally Identifiable Information (PII) was exposed during the incident. “
“Our primary concern is the security and privacy of the sensitive data we hold. We’re always adopting additional security measures in order to stop these kinds of incidents from happening again in the future. We’re determined to protect the privacy and safety of the systems that we utilize. “
The month of July WRAL News reported a Raleigh man filed a lawsuit to Advance Auto Parts after the company announced a data breach that occurred in the year 2024. It was among the five major cyberattacks of 2024 that affected people who live in the area and also AT&T declaring an attack that day on July.
Ticketsmaster CDK along with CDK, and town of Apex were recently affected and so was Apex Town Hall. Apex.
A former FBI security experts and agents Darren Mott talked with WRAL News about what exactly the breach is and the reasons why people should be worried.
“My guess is they had a supply chain issue,” Mott explained. “All of the hardware and software that allows your network to function an item they had in their supply chain was an issue. “
“At this point, the information the SBI can provide them with on cases, their question is, the use of their personal information? “
Mott declared that police departments are among some of the highest-value targets as the majority of departments do not have the tools to protect their networks effectively. The SBI said that there were no other systems that were compromised.
