The Dallas Mavericks are strengthening their backcourt. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Dallas Mavericks acquired Tim Hardaway Jr. from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for shooting guard Quentin Grimes.

Wojnarowski explains that the Toronto Raptors are going to select a second round selection in 2025, and then another two picks for 2028.

By swapping Hardaway with Grimes, Dallas gains some financial flexibility. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon states that this gives the team an opportunity to offer Derrick Jones Jr. a significant part of the midlevel non-taxpayer exemption. Nico Harrison is focusing on resigning Jones.

Grimes signed a contract with the New York Knicks for a period of four years worth $11.1million. It is a guaranteed deal. Grimes will earn $4.2 million next season.

Hardaway has signed a four-year contract with the Mavericks worth $75 million. He will earn $16.1 million in 2024-25 as a Piston. This summer, Hardaway will become a restricted agent.

Grimes played for the Knicks and the Pistons in the same season. New York traded him to Detroit to send Bojan Bogdanovic to the Knicks.

Grimes only played six games with the Pistons before he had to miss the rest of the year to recover from the lingering pain in his muscles caused by an injury in January to his knee due to a bone bruise.

Grimes played 51 games in his third NBA Season for both the Knicks and the Pistons. Grimes averaged 7.0 points on 37.2% shots, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

Hardaway averaged 4.4 points with a 37.9% shooting percentage and 1.8 rebounds in the playoffs. In the playoffs, he averaged 4 points and had a 37.9% shooting rate. He also had 1.8 rebounds.
