New Delhi CNN —

The transforming and divisive PM Narendra Modi declared victory in the national elections on Tuesday evening however, his plan to win an unassailable majority was thrown into disarray after voters gave him shocking results that diminished the power of his political party’s control over the power.

“Today is a glorious day… National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is going to form the government for the third time, we are grateful to the people,” Modi addressed the crowd of supporters who were cheering at his party’s headquarter at New Delhi, referring to the initials of his political alliance. “This is a victory for the world’s largest democracy.”

Modi is expected to form a government with aid by the NDA friends for the third term in a row and an important milestone that makes Modi one of the most successful politicians post independence India.

However, it appears thatModi’s government Bharatiya Janata Party fell inshort of winning the needed 272 seats for an absolute majority in parliament. It was shockingly, leaving them dependent on coalition partners to create an effective government.

Modi’s NDA alliance secured 292 seats in total, from which the BJP alone won 244.

The news is an emotional loss to Modi who had declared his intention to get a 400-seat supermajority during the election this year – and won in two of the previous contests, gaining an easy majority for BJP which transformed the Hindu nationalist right-wing party an election juggernaut.

The opposition in India, which were largely dismissed in polls and by some experts, saw the outcome as a rebuke to Modi’s controversial style.

Rahul Gandhi, who is the leader Indian’s National Congress, said early election results indicated that “country has unanimously and clearly” declared that it doesn’t wish for Modi or his political party govern the country.

“We do not appreciate the way they have run this country for the last 10 years so that is a huge message for Mr. Narendra Modi,” Modi stated outside his party’s headquarters at New Delhi.

Congress was the main force behind an coalition of opposition parties that tried to take down Modi. While they may be unsuccessful in their attempt however, they have shattered his earlier aura of political invincibility.

The results also show that they’ve eroded BJP seats, which includes some of the party’s most cherished strongholds.

In the meantime, Indian stocks fell Tuesday after Modi’s hopes of a massive victory faded away, leaving doubts over the possibility of him implementing more radical economic reforms.

From April 19 through June 1st More than 640 million voters cast their ballots at the polling stations all over the country all the way from the highest Himalayan peaks to the secluded forest in the west.

Although turnout was slightly lower from record highs in 2019, the fact that a democratically elected president has been elected to a third term indicates his level of popularity.

For his millions of followers across the Hindu majority country, 73-year-old Modi is a hero his policies have changed people’s lives, and contributed to the nascent possibility that social advancement in a society which is still divided along class lines.

“No one can do for us what our Prime Minister Modi can,” declared BJP employee Rajgopal Kashyap, from the party’s headquarters in New Delhi. “He is here as a tool of God. He is going to take our country forward and is the sole person who has the power to run the nation.”

In the past decade, Modi’s administration has upgraded India’s old transport system, creating highways that connect villages to major cities. Modi has overseen the creation of new power stations and maritime projects. According to recent statements by Modi himself, he has helped to finance the construction of around 40 million concrete houses for families who had to make do with what they have.

At Modi’s rallies, hundreds of thousands gather with fervent worship to see the man they wish does not lose his hold on the power. Modi’s visage is emblazoned on billboards and buses throughout the nation and his voice can be heard in into the lives of millions of people every month through his radio show and the ever-changing the media environment.

But his tenure as president was not without controversies.

Modi is now focusing to accelerate his reforms in India and aims of transforming the country into a fully developed country in 2047, which marks the centenary of its independence from the colonial British rule. Modi was the inheritor of a growing economy, and the growth of India is still amazing and fueled by the booming young population.

However, that same workforce is also constantly underemployed as youth unemployment is rising and the nation’s expanding wealth being distributed unevenly.

Even with his diminished mandate, his supporters believe Modi remains the best choice to fulfill his economic promises and strengthen the nation’s status as a key player on the global stage.

“For us middle-class people, (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) is the only one who has done anything, who has shined India’s name abroad,” said Surjeet Singh, a driver in New Delhi.

A political Scientist Christophe Jaffrelot says such sentiment “can be seen across the board.”

There’s a sense that Modi creates Indians “proud again,” declared Jaffrelot. “There is a feeling of vulnerability in India of weakness, and a lack of self-confidence. Therefore, to be acknowledged as a powerful power, despite all the things that are attributable to his.”

It has now been revised.
