Police discovered Mavar dead on Thursday morning in the boat yard situated in Naknek, Ala. His family was notified.

Mavar played a prominent role in 98 of the seasons 1 to seventeen of “Deadliest Catch” working as a deckhand for the “Northwestern” fishing boat. Mavar was also featured in several “Deadliest Catch” spin-offs, including “Deadliest Catch: Legends Born & Broken” and “Deadliest Catch: Evolution of Danger.”

Nick Mavar, a member of a real-life boat crew featured on television's "Deadliest Catch" for 17 seasons, died of natural causes in Alaska at age 59.

Mavar left the show in December of 2020 when his appendix ruptured during filming, revealing an infected tumor. Mavar would later sue the owner of the boat Sig Hansen to recover $1 million based on “failure to have an adequate plan in place” to deal with an emergency medical situation when strictly enforced Covid limitations were in effect.

The lawsuit was later directed toward “Deadliest Catch’s” production company following Hansen asserted that Original Productions Inc. was responsible for the implementation of the procedures that hindered Mavar’s medical treatment.

The lawyers representing the defendants have denied the allegations in court documents which claimed Mavar and other third parties were liable for the events which led to his injuries, and that the defendants did not agree to shield Mavar from harm or loss.

Nine years earlier, Mavar was a victim of a different incident while shooting “Deadliest Catch.” During an intense weather storm, the hook swung loose and hit Mavar on the face, causing him to suffer broken nose. Much like the appendix incident, this incident would be documented on the Discovery Channel’s YouTube channel.

After being on the reality show for a total of fifteen years Mavar passed away on Bristol Bay captaining his own salmon boat. The viewers of the show have taken on social media to grieve his passing.

Mavar has been survived by his spouse, Julie.
