Oilers beat Panthers to make a winner-take-all Game 7 to decide the Stanley Cup

If Edmonton is victorious, it will be only the second club that has ever won in NHL history to rebound to a 3-1 deficit take home a championship.

The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Florida Panthers 5-1 on Friday, to make it a winner-take-all game 7 to decide the Stanley Cup.

The third straight loss suffered by the Panthers is the beginning of the possibility of a massive Stanley Cup collapse. One player ever in NHL history has overcome a 3-1 deficit to take the title.

The game 6 result was huge away from the three victories in the early games of the series where Florida’s Panthers had scored 11 points in a row.

In the game on Friday Edmonton held the Panthers scoreless until the third period. the Florida’s Aleksander Barkov made a goal that brought the score down to 3-3. This would be the Panthers only goal of the game.

Warren Foegele, Adam Henrique and Zach Hyman had the first three goals for the Oilers. Ryan McLeod and Darnell Nurse scored the two goals in the final minutes of the game against a net that was empty to win 5-1.

Edmonton Goalie Stuart Skinner fended off a late attempt by Florida trying to get some momentum with the time slipping away however, the two empty net goals did not leave any doubt about the final result. Skinner recorded 19 saves during the night.

One team – Toronto Maple Leafs Toronto Maple Leafs — have recovered to a 3-1 deficit in order to win the game, and it was 82 years ago when they played Detroit. Detroit Red Wings. Three other teams have accomplished the feat during earlier playoff rounds.

Apart from the chance to create history, a victory for Edmonton Monday could end a drought of 31 years for Canada.

The country that loves hockey hasn’t been able to claim one Stanley Cup winner since the 1992-93 Montreal Canadiens.

“Hockey has always been Canada’s sport,” Edmonton mayor Amarjeet Sohi said to NBC News earlier this month. “Hockey in Canada is king and queen.”

Oilers stars Connor McDavid had no goals or assists in Game 6, however, McDavid is on the scoreboard with 11 points thus far in the Stanley Cup Final — just two more than Wayne Gretzky’s mark of 13 points, which he scored in 1988 playing for the Oilers.

Game 7 starts scheduled for 8. p.m. Monday night at Amerant Bank Arena located in Sunrise, Florida.
