Olympian Lilly King and fiance James Wells discuss their viral engagement on TODAY
The range of rings is from Olympic rings to engagement Ring!
Just moments after swimmer Lilly King qualified June 20 for her second race for the Paris Olympics , she had a major surprise in store — her longtime boyfriend, James Wells, got down on one knee and popped the question (she said yes!).
King 27-year-old King stated that she was completely shocked when she heard about his proposal. King, 27, said she was completely stunned by the timing of his.
“I was expecting it more after the Games because we’re going to go frolic around Europe after that, but last night I was not expecting it at all,” she revealed to TODAY on the 21st of June as she and her now-fiancee joined in the event from Indianapolis which is which is where they were at the USA Swimming trials are taking place.
“I was honestly just so confused why he was on deck,” she explained. “After I asked”Why aren’t you wearing nice clothes?’ And I thought is there something wrong? Then I realized”Oh, I know the reason””
Wells explained the reasons he chose to ask the question earlier than he had planned.
“I was actually, funny enough, initially thinking of doing it after it was over with at the Paris Games. … Then simply seeing Lilly with all her friends here, and sort of in the same stadium as her home state, I thought I thought this could be a truly special moment for her to be able to share with the world,” he said.
It is expected that the Paris Games will be King’s third Olympics. She was awarded two gold medals during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for the 100-meter breaststroke as well as the 4×100 meters Medley relay. She also earned the silver and bronze medals as well as a bronze at the postponed 2021 Summer Olympics at Tokyo.
After having qualified to compete in her 3rd Olympics It appears that King is still working through the recent major achievements.
“It was already an amazing week that started off. It’s true, being on the third Olympic team could not be more memorable and I’m now planning to get married.” the actress said Today’s show.
What about the celebration of her Olympic accomplishments and engagement? King and Wells have said they plan to keep things under the radar this weekend.
“I think we’re going to go home and see our pets for a little bit,” King declared.
King was previously the subject of headlines during her appearance at the 2016 Summer Olympics in which she appeared to poke her fingers towards Russian athlete Yuliya Efimova who was previously banned for 16 months due to doping as she watched her on TV.
King appeared to be ridiculing Efimova who was waving her fingers in the same way following her win in a semifinal match.
Then, King took on her semi-finals and came out at first and put her finger the same way.
“You know, you’re shaking your finger No. 1. You’ve been arrested for drug-related cheating,” King later told NBC Sports. “I’m just not, you know, I’m not a fan.”
