Rajya Sabha MP’s Daughter Runs BMW Over Man Sleeping On Pavement, Gets Bail, Chennai

In a different case that involved an important person just a few months following an incident in the Pune Porsche accident, the daughter of an Rajya Sabha MP allegedly ran her BMW over a sleeper on the pavement in Chennai.

In a separate case involving an important person, less than a month from that Pune Porsche accident, the daughter of the Rajya Sabha MP allegedly ran her BMW over a sleeping man on the pavement in Chennai. The victim died from his injuries, and the girl is now in jail.

On the night of Monday, Madhuri, the daughter of YSR Congress Party Rajya Sabha MP Beeda Masthan Rao, was driving the BMW and was accompanied by an female companion. She was accused of driving the car over Surya who was a painter aged 24 who was lying on the road at Chennai’s Besant Nagar in a drunken state.

The police said that the friend of Madhuri was taken off the vehicle, she was arguing with the people who were gathered after the incident. She walked away after a certain time. A few of the crowd tried to take Surya to a hospital however, he passed away from the injuries he sustained.

Surya was married eight months ago. His family and friends from the colony were gathered at the J-5 Shastri Nagar Police Station, asking for the police to take action. After the police inspected their CCTV video footage they realized that the car was owned by the BMR (Beeda Masthan Rao) Group and was registered in Puducherry. Madhuri was detained but granted bail by the police station within the police station.

Comment Mr Rao was elected the Rajya Sabha MP in 2022 and also served as an MLA. It is the BMR group is well-known within the industry of seafood.

Beeda Madhuri, the child of Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Beeda Masthan Rao Beeda Madhuri, is accused of running over a sleeping man aged 22 on a sidewalk close to Besant Nagar in Chennai on Monday evening. The incident has caused a controversy in the city as Madhuri was believed to be driving the BMW vehicle, was later released on bail at the station after surrendering in the early hours of Tuesday.

The incident took place in Tiger Varadachari Road near Kalakshetra Colony. They identified the victim as Surya artist who lived in Odaikuppam close to Besant Nagar.

According to police, Surya had an argument with his wife Vanitha on Monday. After drinking alcohol and sleeping, he laid on the ground close to Varadaraj Salai, which is about 2 kilometers of his house. Vanitha, who was concerned about his safety, searched for the man and located him on the road.

“As she stepped aside to call relatives for help, the car driven by Madhuri turned onto the road and ran over Surya,” an officer from the police who was connected to the investigation said.

According to eyewitnesses’ accounts and Vanitha’s statements, the car was stopped for a brief time after the accident. Two women, according to reports, stepped from the vehicle to examine the situation, notified an ambulance, then left the scene, as the crowd began to gather.

People who passed by rushed Surya for transport to Government Royapettah Hospital, where Surya was declared dead upon the hospital’s arrival.

The dead has been identified by Surya artist who resided in Odaikuppam close to Besant Nagar.

Madhuri and her lawyer and legal counsel, appeared before officers on a Tuesday in the morning. The police arrested her on suspicion of causing death through negligence, in contravention of Section 304A under the Indian Penal Code, but was released under bail of the station shortly afterward.

According to an officer with a high rank the police made a mistake by having the accused go on bail at the station, in lieu of bail at court. “Had it been court bail, it would have also secured the medical report of the car driver,” the officer claimed.

The incident has caused anger from Surya’s parents who have complained to the police about their lack of action. They took over the Shastri Nagar police station Monday night, requesting immediate actions towards the motorist. The crowd dispersed once the police promised to take strong actions.

The police stated that Surya was newly married and was trying to earn money through paintings and other odd work.

The traffic investigation unit of Adyar is currently investigating the incident.
