Seth Binzer, the lead singer of Los Angeles rap-rock band Crazy Town which had an US No. 1 smash by releasing Butterfly in 2001, has passed away aged 49. It was reported that the LA medical examiner confirmed that Binzer’s death occurred on the 24th of June, 2024 but did not give a cause.

Binzer who is who is also known under the name Shifty Shellshock, was the founder of Crazy Town in 1995 alongside Bret Mazur. They released their first album, The Gift of the Game in 1999.

The band initially struggled to find the success it was seeking, with two singles not charting. The prospects for the band appeared grim, especially after they resigned from the touring Ozzfest Festival in 2000 following Binzer was detained after throwing his chair through the window after being drunk.

However, in the autumn of 2000 they released a new track, Butterfly that sampled Pretty Little Ditty by Red Hot Chili Peppers who were who they had earlier toured. The song rose up the US charts to hit No. 1 in the year following while In the UK it reached 3rd place.

The band was reluctant to make the track the album’s debut single, the band claimed that they were concerned about how that it would define their style. Binzer stated: “A song like Butterfly is a no-brainer, everyone seems to love that no matter how hard they are, it’s very radio friendly, the female audience loves it and at the same time I think we kept our integrity with it.”

They made the right assumption that when they went on tour in 2001 with Ozzfest at the end of 2001 Binzer stated to Rolling Stone that the group were a band with “a lot to prove” due to the single – in particular, they are “aggressive punk kids – a real band and not a pop act”. However, they received mixed reviews, and were dismissed for being “the Butterfly boys”, MTV stated.

The band released their second album called Darkhorse which came out in the year 2002 however, it did not attain the same levels which led the band to suspend their tour from 2003 until 2007.

in 2002 Binzer joined forces together with Paul Oakenfold on the single Starry Eyed Surprise. In 2004 Binzer released a solo album called Happy Love Sick, under the Shifty Shellshock name.

The group came back together in 2007, and one year later, Binzer would participate in the VH1 reality show Celebrity Rehab and a followup show, Sober House, during when he would relapse.

In 2015, they launched their third studio album entitled The Brimstone Sluggers. The album did not chart. After Mazur quit the band in the year 2017, Binzer renamed the group Crazy Town X, and continued to tour until 2023. The group was kicked off the tour in 2017 with the nu metal group Hed PE after a fight between their frontman Bobby Reeves and Binzer.

Binzer is the son of Rollin Binzer who was the director of the concert film of 1974 Ladies and Gentlemen: the Rolling Stones, and former model Leslie Brooks. He grew up within Boston in Massachusetts and LA and was introduced to rap through going across New York City to buy cassette tapes. He also discovered skateboarding.

Binzer opened up about his time in prison when he was a kid, due to incidents such as assault using guns and also selling and consuming drugs and battling addiction.

In the early decade, his marriage with British fashion model Jasmine Lennard was marked by allegations of battery and substance usage. Then, in 2022, Lennard was detained by police in Los Angeles for driving under the influence.

Binzer’s death is the third of his predecessors Crazy Town members Rust Epique in 2004, and DJ AM in 2009.
