The film documents the newsroom’s discussions and reactions to important news events that were crucial to the progress that took place during The 19th including the coronavirus epidemic, the death of Breonna Taylor and the reverse of Roe in the case of Roe v. Wade. The 19th also chronicles its internal struggle to change traditional industry precedents.
“This film is such an honest and heartfelt reflection of the early days of The 19th, and we’re grateful it’s going to be available for even wider viewing,” 19th’s CEO Emily Ramshaw.

This film is scheduled to be streamed on the PBS Documentaries channel on Amazon Prime Video. The film can also be accessed at a minimal cost through the Apple TV/iTunes along with Comcast Xfinity.
“Breaking the News” premiered at the TriBeCa Film Festival in June 2023. The film was awarded the 2023 David Carr Award for Truth in Filmmaking at the Montclair Film Festival The film was selected as an official selection of the previous festival El Paso Film Festival and the DC/DOX Film Festival and the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival in addition to various festivals. The premiere of the film on broadcast the 20th of February, 2024 at PBS. This film was edited and written by Heather Courtney, Princess A. Hairston and Chelsea Hernandez and produced by Diane Quon.
